How Games Are Built to Take Your Child’s Money
Oct 15, 2026
This post isn’t really about your child. It’s about the people who designed what your child is playing, and it’s the part parents tell me they wish they’d known first.
None of it is an accident. Every mechanic below was built, tested and refined to move money, and plenty of it was tested on children.
Loot boxes are a poker machine with better graphics
You pay for a chance at a rare item. You might get it. You probably won’t, so you go again.
That’s a random reward schedule. It’s the most habit-forming payout structure anyone has ever found, and it’s the same one running inside a poker machine. The difference is that a pokie is age restricted and this isn’t.
If your child has ever spent money on a chance at something rather than the thing itself, that’s what they met.
The shop rotates so nothing is ever just available
Items appear and disappear on a daily timer. Nothing sits there waiting.
That’s the oldest trick in retail, running 24 hours a day in a child’s bedroom, and it does one job: it converts a “maybe later” into a “right now”. A nine year old has no defence against it, because the true answer to “can I get it next week?” is no, you can’t.
Your child isn’t being impatient. They’re being accurate.
What this changes about the conversation
Once you can see the design, the whole thing stops being a character issue at your place.
- It stops being about willpower, which your child does not have yet (and neither do most adults).
- It gives you something to be on their side about, instead of something to be against them about.
- And it works brilliantly on older kids. An eleven year old finds it genuinely interesting that a company engineered the urgency they’ve been feeling.
That last one matters more than it sounds. Around eleven, your settings become a formality. Explaining the design is one of the few things that still works, because it treats your child as clever rather than untrustworthy.
There are more of these
Loot boxes and the rotating shop are the two that make the news. They’re not the only ones, and a couple of the quieter mechanics are doing more damage, including one built into the pack sizes themselves.
