Why Your Kid Doesn’t Think Robux Is Real Money

You said no to buying Robux. They asked again. Then again. Somewhere around the third time, “no” stopped working, because you haven’t got a reason that means anything to a person who doesn’t think Robux is money in the first place.

They’re not being cheeky. To them, it genuinely isn’t money.

Their brain has filed it in the wrong folder

Robux has a different name to money, a different colour, and it arrives without anything leaving anybody’s hand. So a child’s brain files it where it fits: points in a game. Points are for winning. Money is for swapping.

Until it moves folders, every ‘no’ sounds arbitrary, and they’ll keep asking, because from where they’re standing you’re refusing them something that isn’t real anyway.

You only have one job here

Move it across. Move it out of the points folder and into the money folder.

You don’t do that with a talk about the value of money. You do it with one number, worked out once, out loud, with them holding the pen. Game money stops being points the moment your child does the dividing themselves.

Do the maths with them, not at them

Sit down with paper. No devices out.

1. Ask what they want to buy with the game money and what it costs in game money.
2. Work out the dollar equivalent together, and let them do the sums. (“this many Robux is X dollars”)
3. Then ask the question that does all the work: “What else costs that much?”
4. Write their answers next to the item.
5. Say nothing. Let them look at the list.

That last step is the one parents skip, and it’s the one that lands.

Learning is different at 6, at 9 and at 12

At five to seven, the maths doesn’t work yet. Compare the in game spend to something your child has actually held.

At eight to ten, this works better than it ever will again. Your child can do the division, they can hold a goal for a few weeks, and they haven’t yet worked out how to get around you (for most kids).

At eleven and up, your settings are a formality and they know it. Give them a budget instead of a veto.

Small money moments build lifelong habits. This one is just louder than most, because somebody engineered it to be.
