Age to start teaching children about money

One of the most common questions parents ask is:
“Is my child too young to learn about money?”

It’s an understandable concern. Many parents picture money lessons as budgeting spreadsheets or complex conversations and assume those are for much later.

But here’s the reality:
Children are learning about money much earlier than we think, whether we intentionally teach them or not.

From a very young age, kids observe:

  • How we spend
  • How we talk about money
  • Whether money feels calm, stressful, or confusing

By the time children reach primary school age, many of their core money beliefs are already forming, which builds on what we discussed in last weeks blog. Link here: Blog: How to Teach Kids About Money (Even If You Don’t Feel Confident Yourself).

The desire for most parents isn’t to push adult concepts too early.
It’s to give their kids a healthy, confident relationship with money without stress or pressure.

And that starts with simple awareness, not formal lessons.

Teaching kids about money doesn’t mean sitting them down for lectures. It means recognising that everyday moments already carry powerful messages. We then need to choose to guide those moments with intention.

If you’ve ever thought:

  • “They’re too young to understand”
  • “I don’t want to burden them”
  • “I’ll deal with this later”

You’re not doing anything wrong.
But later often arrives faster than we expect.

👉 In a future blog, we’ll talk about how everyday life, with our guidance, can naturally teach kids about money even when we’re not trying to.

If you want to feel confident knowing what’s appropriate at each stage, and how to introduce money in a calm, age-appropriate way, the Mini Foundation Course walks you through the foundations step by step.
